Tumble dryer drum not turning: causes and safe checks

Likely needs an engineer

Quick answer

If the dryer won’t start at all, check the door is fully closed. If it runs but the drum doesn’t turn, unplug it and turn the drum by hand. A drum that spins very freely usually means a broken drive belt, and one that won’t move may be seized. Both are engineer repairs.

Likely causes

Why this can need an engineer

A broken belt, worn rollers or a seized motor can only be reached by taking the dryer apart. Bosch and Beko both point you to an engineer once the drum feels wrong by hand. Don’t keep running the dryer if the drum doesn’t turn.

What you can safely check yourself

Stop and call a qualified engineer if:
  • The drum doesn’t turn at all, or a dryer drum spins very freely by hand. That usually points to a motor or belt fault for an engineer.
  • You smell burning, see smoke or scorch marks, or the appliance trips your electrics. Stop using it, and switch it off at the wall only if it is safe to reach. Otherwise switch off at the consumer unit.
  • The next step would mean removing a cover or panel, or working on the pump, valves, heater, motor, door lock or wiring. That is a job for a qualified engineer.
  • The appliance is still under warranty. Contact the manufacturer first, because DIY work can affect your cover.

Work through these in order. Stop as soon as one of the signs above applies.

Check the door is fully closed

  1. Check no laundry is caught in the door or the latch.
  2. Close the door firmly. The dryer won’t start with the door open.

Turn the drum by hand

Before you start
  • Switch off and unplug the appliance at the wall socket before you touch hoses, filters or the back of the machine. Make sure your hands and the plug area are dry.
  1. With the dryer unplugged and empty, open the door and turn the drum slowly by hand.
  2. A working drum normally feels stiff and gives some resistance.
  3. If it spins very freely, the drive belt has probably broken. If it won’t move or is very hard to turn, the drum may be seized. Both need an engineer.

Don’t: Don’t remove any panels to look at the belt or motor.
