AEG Washing Machine E60 Error: Meaning, Causes & Safe Checks
Quick answer
AEG E60 (and other E6 codes) is a heating fault: the machine can’t heat the water properly, often because of a faulty heating element. Try one reset by switching off at the wall for about a minute. If the code returns, AEG says not to use the machine until it’s fixed. Keep it unplugged and book an engineer.

What E60 means on a AEG washing machine
The machine has detected a problem heating the water.
Applies to: AEG washing machines. Covers E60 and other codes starting E6.
What you might notice
- Washes come out cold
- The programme stops
- E60 or another E6 code on the display
Likely causes
- Faulty heating element
- A temporary fault that a reset clears
Why this isn’t a DIY job
The heating element is a mains-powered part fitted inside the tub, and it can only be reached by removing panels. AEG says not to use the machine with this fault until it has been fixed. One reset is the only safe step at home.
What to do now
- The manufacturer says not to use the appliance with this fault. Leave it switched off and unplugged until it has been repaired.
- It still doesn’t heat after the checks. Heating faults need an engineer.
- You smell burning, see smoke or scorch marks, or the appliance trips your electrics. Stop using it, and switch it off at the wall only if it is safe to reach. Otherwise switch off at the consumer unit.
- The next step would mean removing a cover or panel, or working on the pump, valves, heater, motor, door lock or wiring. That is a job for a qualified engineer.
- The appliance is still under warranty. Contact the manufacturer first, because DIY work can affect your cover.
There are no safe repair checks for E60. Make the washing machine safe as below, don’t keep restarting it, and book an engineer.
Switch off at the wall and let it rest
- If the display shows a code, write it down first.
- Switch the appliance off and turn it off at the wall socket.
- Leave it off for the time your manual or the manufacturer suggests (see the note below if there is one), then switch on and try again.
For this fault: AEG: switch off at the socket or circuit breaker for about a minute. If the code returns, leave the machine unplugged.
Don’t: Don’t repeat this over and over if the code keeps returning. That means there is a fault to diagnose.
Switch the appliance off safely and don’t use it
- If it is safe to reach and the plug and socket look and feel normal, switch off at the wall and unplug.
- If the plug or socket is hot, scorched or crackling, or there is water around it, don’t touch it. Switch off at the consumer unit instead.
- Don’t use the appliance again until it has been checked by the manufacturer or a qualified engineer.
Don’t: Don’t keep resetting a consumer unit switch that trips again.
When to call an engineer
E60 needs an engineer. Once the washing machine is safe, contact AEG or a qualified appliance engineer. Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, and start with AEG UK support.
Repair or replace?
E60 needs an engineer. Before you book, find the model number and purchase date. If it’s under warranty or an extended plan, contact AEG first. Out of warranty, ask for a quote and weigh it against the age of the washing machine. We don’t publish repair prices because they vary by area, part and model.
