AEG Washing Machine EF0 Error: Meaning, Causes & Safe Checks
Quick answer
AEG EF0 is a protection warning: the machine has detected a possible leak, too much foam, or an unbalanced load. It doesn’t always mean a leak. Use less detergent, clean the dispenser drawer, check for laundry in the door seal, check the filter and hose connections are tight, and inspect the door seal. If it returns, book AEG service.
Also shown as EFO EF3
What EF0 means on a AEG washing machine
The machine has detected a possible leak, excess foam or an unbalanced load and has switched to a protection mode.
Applies to: AEG washing machines and washer dryers. Models without a display signal it with 15 beeps or 15 flashes.
What you might notice
- EF0 or EF3 on the display
- Water under the machine or around the door
- A lot of foam in the drum
Likely causes
- Too much detergent causing excess foam
- Dirty or limescaled detergent drawer letting water overflow
- Laundry caught between the door seal and the glass
- Fluff filter loose or damaged
- Leaking inlet hose connection
- Damaged door seal
- Unevenly loaded drum
What you can safely check yourself
- The appliance reports water in its base (an anti-flood or AquaStop-type warning). Keep the water supply off and book an engineer.
- Water is leaking from inside the appliance or is near the plug or socket. Don’t touch the plug with wet hands or while standing in water. Switch off at the consumer unit instead.
- A hose is split, bulging, cracked or leaking at the connection. Stop using the appliance until the hose is replaced.
- The code or problem comes back after you’ve done the safe checks on this page.
- The next step would mean removing a cover or panel, or working on the pump, valves, heater, motor, door lock or wiring. That is a job for a qualified engineer.
- The appliance is still under warranty. Contact the manufacturer first, because DIY work can affect your cover.
Work through these in order. Stop as soon as one of the signs above applies.
Clear excess foam and use less detergent
- If you can see a lot of foam in the drum, too much detergent may be confusing the water-level system.
- Use the dose on the detergent pack for your load size and water hardness. Use less for small or lightly soiled loads and soft water, and use a detergent made for automatic machines.
- Let the foam settle, then run a hot rinse or empty wash without detergent to flush the residue out.
For this fault: AEG: switch the machine off and leave it for a few hours so the foam settles before trying again.
Clean the detergent drawer
- Pull the detergent drawer out. Many have a release catch, and your manual shows where it is.
- Lift out any removable insert or siphon cap and rinse every compartment under warm running water.
- Brush out detergent and softener residue from the drawer recess in the machine, using an old toothbrush.
- Refit the drawer fully and run a rinse with an empty drum.
Don’t: Don’t put pods or capsules in a drawer that isn’t designed for them. Put them in the drum.
Close the door properly and check for trapped laundry
- Open the door and look around the rubber seal for socks or other items caught between the seal and the glass.
- Take a few items out if the drum is packed tight. An overloaded drum can stop the door closing.
- Push the door firmly shut until you hear a click, then start the programme again.
Don’t: Don’t force the door or the handle.
Clean the drain pump filter Take care
- Switch off and unplug the appliance at the wall socket before you touch hoses, filters or the back of the machine. Make sure your hands and the plug area are dry.
- Water inside can be hot after a hot wash. Wait for it to cool before opening a filter.
- Expect water to come out. Put towels and a shallow tray or baking dish down first.
- Never force a locked door, a stuck filter cap or a seized part. Forcing it usually causes more damage.
- Find the small flap at the bottom front of the machine. Your manual shows the exact location and whether there is a small emergency drain hose.
- With towels and a tray in place, release the water slowly, using the emergency hose if there is one, or by turning the filter cap a little at a time. Expect more water than you think, and empty the tray as often as you need to.
- When the water has stopped, unscrew the filter fully and remove fluff, coins, hair grips and other debris. Rinse it under the tap.
- Look into the opening to check the pump blade can turn freely. If you can see it, manufacturers suggest turning it gently with a pencil, never with your fingers.
- Refit the filter firmly in its locked position and close the flap. Check for drips the next time the machine runs.
For this fault: AEG: the point here is that the fluff filter is undamaged and screwed in firmly by hand. A loose filter can leak.
Don’t: Don’t reach in with fingers past the filter opening.
Don’t: Don’t open the filter while the machine is running or the water is hot.
Check the hose connections for leaks Take care
- Switch off and unplug the appliance at the wall socket before you touch hoses, filters or the back of the machine. Make sure your hands and the plug area are dry.
- Turn off the water supply tap to the appliance before disconnecting any hose.
- The appliance is heavy. Pull it out slowly, ideally with help, and don’t strain the hoses or the cable.
- With the water off, check that both ends of the inlet hose are screwed on securely, and that the rubber sealing ring inside each connector is in place and not damaged.
- Tighten plastic connectors by hand only.
- Check whether the drip is coming from the tap or valve itself rather than the hose.
- Check the drain hose is pushed fully onto its spigot or secured in the standpipe.
Don’t: Don’t use a split or bulging hose. It must be replaced.
Clean and inspect the door seal
- Open the door and wipe fluff, hair and detergent residue from the rubber seal and the edge of the door glass.
- Pull the folds of the seal back gently and remove anything trapped inside.
- Look for tears, holes or perished areas. A damaged seal needs replacing by a qualified engineer.
Rebalance the load
- When the machine lets you open the door, untangle the laundry and spread it evenly around the drum.
- If you are washing one heavy item, such as a bath mat or a large towel, add two or three similar towels so the weight balances.
- Check the load suits the programme. Very small loads and overstuffed drums can both cause balance problems. Your manual gives the maximum load for each programme.
- Restart the spin.
When to call an engineer
If the checks above don’t clear EF0, or any of the stop signs apply, contact AEG or a qualified appliance engineer. Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, and start with AEG UK support.
Repair or replace?
Most EF0 cases are cleared by the safe checks above. If they don’t help, the remaining causes are parts an engineer has to diagnose. We don’t publish repair prices because they vary by area, part and model.

Related codes
- E20AEG The washing machine can’t pump the water out within the time it expects.
- LCSamsung The machine has detected a low water level, which can happen when water is siphoning or leaking out.
- E23Bosch The machine has detected a leak or water in its base plate, and its AquaStop leak protection may have activated.
Questions people ask
AEG’s article mentions tilting the machine. Should I?
We don’t recommend it. AEG’s article describes draining the base tray by tilting the machine back with the power and water disconnected, but a washing machine is very heavy, the base can hold more water than you expect, and that water sits under electrical parts. If you think there’s water in the base, keep the power and water off and book AEG service.
Does EF0 always mean a leak?
No. AEG says it can also be triggered by foam or by an unbalanced load. The message should clear when the programme ends or the next one starts.
