Hotpoint Washing Machine F06 Error: Meaning, Causes & Safe Checks

F06 Check carefully Safe checks first

Quick answer

Hotpoint F06 is a door lock fault: the door won’t open or close, or the machine won’t start with the door shut. Check nothing is obstructing the door lock and that no laundry is caught in the door. If F06 persists, book a Hotpoint engineer. Hotpoint also links a door-lock recall notice from this code, so check your model.

Check for a recall

Hotpoint’s UK error-code page links a safety notice about a recall of the door lock system on certain Hotpoint and Indesit washing machines. Check your model number on Hotpoint’s site and the GOV.UK recall register. Hotpoint UK page.

What F06 means on a Hotpoint washing machine

Hotpoint’s UK service page describes F06 as a door lock fault.

Applies to: Hotpoint washing machines. Indesit uses the same F06 code.

About Hotpoint F06

Hotpoint washing machines show F-codes from F01 to F18. Models without a display show the code as a pattern of flashing lights, which Hotpoint’s UK service site can decode.

This page follows Hotpoint UK’s own article, Washing machine error codes troubleshooting guide. Hotpoint shares this code family with Indesit F06, but each page follows its own brand’s wording, figures and service route.

What you can safely check yourself

Stop and call a qualified engineer if:
  • The door still won’t lock, or still won’t open, after the checks. Door locks are an engineer repair. Never force the door.
  • The code or problem comes back after you’ve done the safe checks on this page.
  • You smell burning, see smoke or scorch marks, or the appliance trips your electrics. Stop using it, and switch it off at the wall only if it is safe to reach. Otherwise switch off at the consumer unit.
  • The appliance is still under warranty. Contact the manufacturer first, because DIY work can affect your cover.

Work through these in order. Stop as soon as one of the signs above applies.

Close the door properly and check for trapped laundry

  1. Open the door and look around the rubber seal for socks or other items caught between the seal and the glass.
  2. Take a few items out if the drum is packed tight. An overloaded drum can stop the door closing.
  3. Push the door firmly shut until you hear a click, then start the programme again.

Don’t: Don’t force the door or the handle.

Check whether your model has been recalled

  1. Find the model and serial number on the appliance’s rating label. Your manual shows where it is.
  2. Search the GOV.UK product safety alerts, reports and recalls register and the manufacturer’s own recall pages for your model.
  3. Register your appliance with the manufacturer so they can contact you about future recalls.

When to call an engineer

If the checks above don’t clear F06, or any of the stop signs apply, contact Hotpoint or a qualified appliance engineer. Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, and start with Hotpoint UK support.

Repair or replace?

Most F06 cases are cleared by the safe checks above. If they don’t help, the remaining causes are parts an engineer has to diagnose. We don’t publish repair prices because they vary by area, part and model.

Questions people ask

The door won’t open and there’s water inside. Is that F06?

Usually not. Hotpoint keeps the door locked while there is water in the drum and lists that under F05, a drain problem. F06 is a fault in the door lock itself.
