Zanussi Washing Machine E40 Error: Meaning, Causes & Safe Checks
Quick answer
Zanussi E40 (or E41, or 4 beeps or flashes) means the machine doesn’t detect the door or lid as closed and locked. Close it fully, remove any clothing trapped in the seal, take out excess laundry, and release the mechanical child lock if your model has one. If it continues with the door shut, book a technician.
Also shown as E41
What E40 means on a Zanussi washing machine
The appliance thinks the door or lid isn’t closed or locked, so it won’t start a cycle.
Applies to: Zanussi washing machines (front and top loaders) and washer dryers. Models without a display signal it with 4 beeps or 4 flashes.
About Zanussi E40
Zanussi washing machines use the same E-code families as AEG (E10, E20, E40), and models without a display signal them with beeps or flashes. Zanussi’s UK articles cover front loaders, top loaders and washer dryers, so some steps mention a lid rather than a door.
This page follows Zanussi UK’s own article, Washing machine error E40/E41. Zanussi shares this code family with AEG E40, but each page follows its own brand’s wording, figures and service route.
What you might notice
- The programme won’t start
- E40 or E41 on the display
Likely causes
- Door not fully closed or lock not engaging
- Clothing trapped in the seal, or drum overloaded
- Mechanical child safety lock engaged
- Worn latch or faulty door lock
What you can safely check yourself
- The door still won’t lock, or still won’t open, after the checks. Door locks are an engineer repair. Never force the door.
- The code or problem comes back after you’ve done the safe checks on this page.
- The appliance is still under warranty. Contact the manufacturer first, because DIY work can affect your cover.
Work through these in order. Stop as soon as one of the signs above applies.
Close the door properly and check for trapped laundry
- Open the door and look around the rubber seal for socks or other items caught between the seal and the glass.
- Take a few items out if the drum is packed tight. An overloaded drum can stop the door closing.
- Push the door firmly shut until you hear a click, then start the programme again.
Don’t: Don’t force the door or the handle.
Check the child lock isn’t on
- Look for a padlock or key symbol, or a message such as CL, on the display.
- Turn the lock off by pressing and holding the marked button (or two marked buttons together) for about 3 to 5 seconds. Your manual shows which buttons your model uses.
- Some models have a mechanical child lock on the door instead. Your manual explains how to release it.
For this fault: Zanussi: release a mechanical child lock with a coin or similar tool, as your manual shows.
When to call an engineer
If the checks above don’t clear E40, or any of the stop signs apply, contact Zanussi or a qualified appliance engineer. Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, and start with Zanussi UK support.
Repair or replace?
Most E40 cases are cleared by the safe checks above. If they don’t help, the remaining causes are parts an engineer has to diagnose. We don’t publish repair prices because they vary by area, part and model.

Questions people ask
My Zanussi is a top loader. Does E40 still apply?
Yes. Zanussi’s article covers top loaders too, where the code means the lid isn’t detected as closed and locked. Close the lid fully and check no clothing is caught in it.
