LG Washing Machine dE Error: Meaning, Causes & Safe Checks
Quick answer
LG dE is a door error: the machine couldn’t lock the door. dE1 usually means it isn’t fully closed, often because laundry is caught in the seal, and dE2 that it’s closed but not latching. Remove anything in the way, close the door firmly, and reset the power. If it returns, the lock needs a repair.
Also shown as dE1 dE2
This code can mean different things on different model series. LG UK confirms what dE means, but some of the steps below come from a LG page for another country. They are general checks, and your UK manual takes priority. Check your manual, or LG UK support with your model number.
What dE means on a LG washing machine
The washing machine couldn’t lock its door.
Applies to: LG front-loading washing machines. LG UK lists dE, dE1, dE2 and dE4 as door errors; the detailed steps come from an LG page for another market.
What you might notice
- The programme won’t start
- dE, dE1 or dE2 on the display
Likely causes
- Door not fully closed, or laundry caught between door and gasket
- A temporary fault that a power reset clears
- Bent or broken door latch, or door lock fault
What you can safely check yourself
- The door still won’t lock, or still won’t open, after the checks. Door locks are an engineer repair. Never force the door.
- The code or problem comes back after you’ve done the safe checks on this page.
- The appliance is still under warranty. Contact the manufacturer first, because DIY work can affect your cover.
Work through these in order. Stop as soon as one of the signs above applies.
Close the door properly and check for trapped laundry
- Open the door and look around the rubber seal for socks or other items caught between the seal and the glass.
- Take a few items out if the drum is packed tight. An overloaded drum can stop the door closing.
- Push the door firmly shut until you hear a click, then start the programme again.
Don’t: Don’t force the door or the handle.
Switch off at the wall and let it rest
- If the display shows a code, write it down first.
- Switch the appliance off and turn it off at the wall socket.
- Leave it off for the time your manual or the manufacturer suggests (see the note below if there is one), then switch on and try again.
Don’t: Don’t repeat this over and over if the code keeps returning. That means there is a fault to diagnose.
When to call an engineer
If the checks above don’t clear dE, or any of the stop signs apply, contact LG or a qualified appliance engineer. Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, and start with LG UK support.
Repair or replace?
Most dE cases are cleared by the safe checks above. If they don’t help, the remaining causes are parts an engineer has to diagnose. We don’t publish repair prices because they vary by area, part and model.
