LG Washing Machine CL Error: Meaning, Causes & Safe Checks
Quick answer
LG CL isn’t a fault: it means the child lock (control lock) is on, so the buttons are disabled. With the machine switched on, press and hold the lock button, or the two buttons marked with the lock symbol, for about 3 to 5 seconds. The lock stays on after a cycle ends until you turn it off.
This code can mean different things on different model series. LG UK confirms what CL means, but some of the steps below come from a LG page for another country. They are general checks, and your UK manual takes priority. Check your manual, or LG UK support with your model number.
What CL means on a LG washing machine

Check the child lock isn’t on
- Look for a padlock or key symbol, or a message such as CL, on the display.
- Turn the lock off by pressing and holding the marked button (or two marked buttons together) for about 3 to 5 seconds. Your manual shows which buttons your model uses.
- Some models have a mechanical child lock on the door instead. Your manual explains how to release it.
When to call an engineer
If the checks above don’t clear CL, or any of the stop signs apply, contact LG or a qualified appliance engineer. Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, and start with LG UK support.
Repair or replace?
CL is usually something you can sort out yourself with the checks above, so a repair visit is rarely needed. We don’t publish repair prices because they vary by area, part and model.
