LG Washing Machine LE Error: Meaning, Causes & Safe Checks

LE Check carefully Safe checks first

Quick answer

LG LE means the motor can’t turn the drum properly. LG says it can happen with too much laundry, after running the machine continuously, or when a coin is caught in the drum gap. Unplug for 5 minutes, reduce the load, and remove any visible coins. If LE keeps returning, unplug the machine and contact LG.

What LE means on a LG washing machine

The motor can’t turn the drum normally (LG calls it a motor locked error).

Applies to: LG front-loading washing machines sold in the UK.

What you can safely check yourself

Stop and call a qualified engineer if:
  • The code or problem comes back after you’ve done the safe checks on this page.
  • The drum doesn’t turn at all, or a dryer drum spins very freely by hand. That usually points to a motor or belt fault for an engineer.
  • You smell burning, see smoke or scorch marks, or the appliance trips your electrics. Stop using it, and switch it off at the wall only if it is safe to reach. Otherwise switch off at the consumer unit.
  • The next step would mean removing a cover or panel, or working on the pump, valves, heater, motor, door lock or wiring. That is a job for a qualified engineer.
  • The appliance is still under warranty. Contact the manufacturer first, because DIY work can affect your cover.

Work through these in order. Stop as soon as one of the signs above applies.

Switch off at the wall and let it rest

  1. If the display shows a code, write it down first.
  2. Switch the appliance off and turn it off at the wall socket.
  3. Leave it off for the time your manual or the manufacturer suggests (see the note below if there is one), then switch on and try again.

For this fault: LG: unplug, wait 5 minutes, plug back in and try again.

Don’t: Don’t repeat this over and over if the code keeps returning. That means there is a fault to diagnose.

Rebalance the load

  1. When the machine lets you open the door, untangle the laundry and spread it evenly around the drum.
  2. If you are washing one heavy item, such as a bath mat or a large towel, add two or three similar towels so the weight balances.
  3. Check the load suits the programme. Very small loads and overstuffed drums can both cause balance problems. Your manual gives the maximum load for each programme.
  4. Restart the spin.

For this fault: LG: take some laundry out, and use the Bedding programme for large duvets.

Check the drum and door seal for coins and small objects

Before you start
  • Switch off and unplug the appliance at the wall socket before you touch hoses, filters or the back of the machine. Make sure your hands and the plug area are dry.
  1. With the machine switched off and unplugged, take the laundry out.
  2. Look in the folds of the door seal and around the drum for coins, buttons, hair grips or underwire.
  3. Remove anything you can see and reach easily, with tweezers if needed.
  4. Empty pockets before every wash. Coins and buckles can damage the drum and the door glass.

Don’t: Don’t try to reach objects that have fallen behind the drum. That needs an engineer.

When to call an engineer

If the checks above don’t clear LE, or any of the stop signs apply, contact LG or a qualified appliance engineer. Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, and start with LG UK support.

Repair or replace?

Most LE cases are cleared by the safe checks above. If they don’t help, the remaining causes are parts an engineer has to diagnose. We don’t publish repair prices because they vary by area, part and model.
